Jāzeps Grosvalds (1891–1920), one of the most prominent and educated Latvian artists, is described in Latvian art history as the founder of Classical Modernism and a depicter of themes essential to the nation during the period of war and political crises.
His Refugee and Rifleman series contain iconic works that express the tragedy of this era. Grosvalds is no less important as the first and most outstanding orientalist in Latvian art, as evidenced by the scenes and notes of his journey to Persia. A unique part of the written materials is Grosvalds’ diaries and numerous letters to his brother, which allow us to trace his biography day by day.
Eduards Kļaviņš’ book was created in the series “Classics of Latvian Art", which introduces the works of Latvian art classics and the circumstances of their creation. The book includes a full English translation of the text and a wide range of reproductions. The book also includes a timeline revealing connections, parallels, and interesting coincidences between the Latvian artist's life and world events.
